  • This guy knows what’s up.

Red Herring has an interview with Atari founder Nolan Bushnell. I’ll quote the best part here but be sure to read the whole article!

    Q: What about Sony’s PlayStation 3 Strategy?

A: I think Sony shot themselves in the foot… there is a high probability [they] will fail. The price point is probably unsustainable. For years and years Sony has been a very difficult company to deal with from a developer standpoint. They could get away with their arrogance and capriciousness because they had an installed base. They have also historically had horrible software tools. You compare that to the Xbox 360 with really great authoring tools [and] additional revenue streams from Xbox live… a first party developer would be an idiot to develop for Sony first and not the 360. People don’t buy hardware, they buy software.

Q: But what about Sony’s success with the PlayStation and PS2? They sold more than 100 million of each system.

A: It wasn’t anything brilliant that they did. With the PS and PS2 it was timing. They had the right pricing at the right time [and were] almost the accidental winner. It would not surprise me if a year from now they’ll be struggling to sell 1 million units. [Factoring in the PS3’s price], I think in the U.S. the number of early adopters you have is actually around 300,000.

  • Hit the Pipe!

Xbox announced yesterday their new “Xbox LIVE PIPELINE” for browsing the LIVE Marketplace on the web. This is a good idea but still needs some work. After using the service for a day I have some good and bad things to say.

First, the positives: a well built site that’s not a total pain to navigate, a chance to preview new releases before you (go find them again and) download them. A little preview is available for each title and included cost of each. I do like this mainly so I don’t have to waist game-time on the 360 Marketplace unless there’s something I want to go grab.

Now the cons: no freaking preview of themes or gamer-pictures? COME ON! I just want to see what I’m buying before I pull the trigger. I also think there should be a way to message yourself on the console so you don’t have to go find the download again. Just allowing for the user to message a link or reminder would be great.

  • Sony’s Blunders

Announced today on ITP.net is Sony’s latest bad news…. no launch for PS3 in Europe, the Middle East and Africa until at least March 2007. Not only that but they are going to have to pay nearly us$1000 for the Blue-Ray ready console. Reason for the delay? Not enough Blue-Ray drives for the devices. Meanwhile, Microsoft announced they will have “significant volumes” of their HD-Player ready for this holiday season. All in all, this is turning out to be an interested battle.
